About:

WANTAGH, N.Y. — The NYIT women’s lacrosse team helped raise awareness for Suicide Prevention at the Out of the Darkness Long Island Walk at Jones Beach on Sunday.

The team supported the family of former NYIT goalie Lauren Young, who graduated in May. Young’s twin sister Shannon currently is combatting mental illness.

“When one of our own is affected, we are all affected,” coach Kerri Handras said. “We are proud to walk alongside Shannon and she fights her battle and has the courage to tell her story.”

Long Island’s 5K walk had the third-largest turnout of any Out of the Darkness Walk in 2016.

The event is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
